The Last Light - An Apocalyptic Musical
Title: The Last Light
Theme:
The modern collapse of civilisation, driven by extremism, willful ignorance, and ideological warfare. A small resistance group—the Wokarati—fights a losing battle, but a final act of courage plants the seed for a better future.
ACT I – "The Days of Fire"
1. Prologue – “Before the Burn”
[Ensemble]
[Mixed genders]
A kaleidoscopic montage of life before collapse—climate protests, culture wars, social media rants. The world is on edge, but still spinning.
2. “We Are the Wokarati”
[Wokarati ensemble]
[Mixed genders]
The idealistic resistance group introduces itself, full of purpose and fire. They are artists, scientists, thinkers, and ordinary people determined to protect truth and compassion.
3. “March of the True Believers”
[Neo-Fascists, Christian Nationalists, Jihadists]
[Mixed genders]
A terrifying, militaristic anthem showing the rise of various fundamentalist ideologies. Each group sings its own verses, converging into a chaotic, cultish chorus.
4. “Too Late to Change”
[Earth/Gaia character or Narrator figure]
[Female]
A sorrowful ballad from the point of view of the Earth itself. She mourns her own poisoning.
5. “Facts Don’t Matter”
[Right-wing media pundits, social media chorus]
[Mixed genders]
A sharp, satirical number highlighting the rise of misinformation and climate denial. The Wokarati try to intervene but are drowned out.
6. “We Are Losing”
[Wokarati]
[Mixed genders]
The Wokarati start to splinter. Internal conflict, despair, and doubt creep in. Some leave, some radicalise, some cling to hope.
7. Act I Finale – “Ashes”
[Ensemble]
[Mixed genders]
The world tips into irreversible collapse: wars, floods, fire. The Wokarati are scattered. The sky goes black.
ACT II – "The Long Night"
1. “The Dark Age Returns”
[Ensemble – survivors and warlords]
[Mixed genders]
Post-apocalyptic setting. Theocratic, fascist and tribal societies rise from the ruins. No more internet. No more books. Power is held by fire and fear.
2. “Three of Us Left”
[Remaining Wokarati]
[2 or 3 characters – can include one child]
[Mixed genders]
A quiet, intimate piece. The few who remain wander the ruins, trying to preserve knowledge and stories.
3. “The Last Archive”
[Wokarati + mysterious Archivist character]
[Mixed genders]
They discover or build a hidden place to store truth: books, seeds, recordings. A vault for a better future. Maybe it’s just a dream.
4. “If They Could Hear Us”
[Wokarati leader – solo]
[Male or female]
A raw, final plea to the past—to us, the audience—to act, to remember, to care. It’s too late for them, but maybe not for us.
5. “In the Ash”
[Child or young Wokarati]
[Female or male]
They plant a seed in the ruins. The others don’t notice. A quiet, simple moment.
6. Finale – “The Seed”
[Ensemble – ghostly Wokarati and distant voices of the future]
[Mixed genders]
Out of silence, a fragile melody grows. Hope is reborn—not triumphant, but defiant. A tiny green shoot breaks through cracked earth.
Optional Epilogue
“Light Again”
[One voice, possibly a child or future being]
A lullaby or mantra. No promise of salvation, just a whispered reminder: "We tried. You must try too."
